SOKOL ARENA AND RYAN ATHLETIC CENTER
CREIGHTON BLUEJAYS
Using branding and permanent, cutting-edge installations to revitalize Creighton’s women’s basketball and volleyball facilities. The goal was to highlight the strength of the University’s women’s programs, celebrate the generosity of donors, and reinforce the sense of pride that defines Creighton Athletics. Even when the court is empty, this space is full of life.

“They did an outstanding job. Their team was great to work with throughout the entire process — they were engaging with our coaches and staff, responsive to our feedback and needs, and ultimately put forth a first-class product that has had a huge impact on our athletic programs.”
- Mark “Butch” A. Burgers, Former Associate Athletic Director, Creighton Bluejays
Before the redesign, Sokol Arena and Ryan Athletic Center felt dated and uninspired — a missed opportunity to reflect the excellence of Creighton’s programs. The concourse lacked energy, storytelling, and defined spaces for fans to connect with the program’s success. Both athletes and visitors experienced a facility that didn’t match the pride or prestige of Creighton Athletics.
Athletics leadership and Facilities recognized the need to reimagine these spaces — not just for function, but as a visible expression of Creighton’s competitive and community-driven spirit. With architectural constraints and a focused budget, the challenge was to create meaningful, high-impact moments throughout the arena and adjoining center.

The project’s vision was to turn a highly trafficked, utilitarian venue into an experience that embodies the Bluejays’ identity — driven, unified, and proud. It needed to serve multiple audiences: athletes seeking inspiration, fans wanting connection, and donors looking for acknowledgment.
The goal was to elevate every moment inside the arena — from walking the concourse to stepping onto the court. It was an opportunity to merge emotion and environment, building a sense of belonging and momentum that would carry beyond competition.

The Athletic Branding Company collaborated with Athletics and Facilities to translate Creighton’s brand values into a design that balanced athletic energy with refined execution. Through extensive walkthroughs and design exploration, our team identified key moments for impact — the entry experience, donor storytelling, and on-court presentation.
Working within architectural limitations, we focused on what could deliver the most emotion per square foot. Every choice — from lighting and materials to placement of installations — was designed to evoke energy, connection, and pride while maintaining brand consistency across the athletics program.

The reimagined Sokol Arena and Ryan Athletic Center blend bold storytelling with refined craftsmanship. The concourse now features custom-built trophy displays, an enhanced entryway with hand-blown illuminated glass basketballs and volleyballs, and a dedicated Hall of Fame experience that celebrates both athletic excellence.
On the court, custom lit graphics, accolade banners, and brand-consistent visual cues energize the space and bring the Bluejays’ identity to life from every seat. Each design decision connects emotion with function — guiding visitors through a journey that celebrates heritage, achievement, and the pursuit of excellence.
Through smart value-engineering, we ensured that every dollar invested amplified impact — proving that strategy-led design can elevate even the most familiar environments.

The revitalized Sokol Arena and Ryan Athletic Center have become benchmarks for Creighton’s brand presence. The transformation has elevated recruiting and fan experience while giving donors and alumni a renewed sense of pride in the program. Athletes now compete and train in an environment that mirrors their dedication and excellence.
The project stands as a testament to the power of design as strategy — a space that unifies identity, honors achievement, and inspires everyone who walks through its doors.
